DINK Entertainment presents, "Arthur! A Celebration of Life."
New York City, NY (January 28, 2006) DINK Entertainment pays tribute to the incomparable
Arthur Ashe as a salute to the African-American legends of the sports world and beyond.
Joseph H. James, Jr., producer, director, and actor portrays a strong resemblance of Arthur Ashe.
At a very young age, Mr. Ashe influenced James both on and off the tennis court to pursue
greatness. More than twenty years later James, the Hampton Roads, VA native pays tribute to
the legacy of Arthur Ashe. Joseph H. James, Jr. wrote, directed, produced as well as starred as
the Hall of Famed tennis great, author, philanthropist, and activist in the docudrama, “Arthur! A
Celebration of Life.” Mr. James reinvented his hero’s trials and tribulations on screen and leaves
viewers amazed. The film celebrates Ashe’s life and achievements from childhood to his
unfortunate passing.
Arthur Ashe, a tennis star of the 1960s and 1970s was also an African-American pioneer. He
was the first black man to win at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon. Ashe scored many other firsts
in his career, including becoming the first African-American on the U.S. Davis Cup team in
1963. He played tennis at UCLA and was national collegiate champion in 1965. Mr. Ashe won
three major tournaments in his career: the U.S. Open (1968), the Australian Open (1970) and
Wimbledon (1975). Ashe retired in 1980 and was elected to the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985.
In 1988 Arthur discovered that he had AIDS. It is believed that his illness was the result of a
contaminated blood supply received during a transfusion after his heart surgery in 1983. Ashe
made the news public at a 1992 press conference and died the next year.
Ashe served in the U.S. Army from 1966-68, reaching the rank of second lieutenant. Ashe’s
three-volume history of African-American athletes, A Hard Road To Glory, was published in
1988. His book Days of Grace: A Memoir was published in 1993. The main court of the
National Tennis Center (home to the U.S. Open) is named Arthur Ashe Stadium. Ashe is
sometimes compared with another tennis star that broke racial barriers, Althea Gibson.
